Discovery of Botox

Botox actually dates back to the 1820s. Was your great-grandmother getting Botox? German scientist Dr. Justinus Kerner discovered botulinum toxin when he was studying food poisoning. He noticed that multiple patients who died of food poisoning from spoiled sausages had muscle weakness, paralysis, and droopy eyelids. He theorized that the botulinum toxin in the food was responsible.  Of course, these days you don’t get wild doses of Botox to give you all of those things, but that’s how it all started! Dr. Kerner even injected a small dose of botulinum in his body to test his theory. As more and more people died of botulism, other doctors and scientists studied the toxin. They observed the changes to the muscles and skin of each victim. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Dr. Alan B. Scott, an ophthalmologist, started to really dive into the toxin’s effects on the eye muscles. He realized it could treat crossed eyes.

The 1980s

Fast forward to the 1980s when Dr. Edward Schantz and his medical team isolated the botulinum toxin in crystalline form. This was the step that truly created Botox as we know it. We could then explore the full potential of the toxin. In 1989, the FDA approved Botox for therapeutic use. Allergan began marketing it to treat medical conditions, including excessive sweating and muscle spasms. In 2002, Botox was FDA-approved for cosmetic use. It was originally used to reduce frown lines between the eyebrows.

Botox Continues to Expand

Botox continued to grow as an excellent way to fight lines and wrinkles. Today it’s used throughout the world to address fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Many medical experts use it to treat muscle disorders, migraines, and excessive sweating. It’s arguably the best and easiest way to combat signs of aging without going under the knife.
